Behind the Scenes at Hippie Stitches
Lately, life has been full...in a really good way.
I’ve been busy planning a local handmade market, creating new crochet pieces, and spending a lot of time thinking about what I want Hippie Stitches to feel like when you see it in person. Not just what it looks like, but the experience of browsing the booth, touching the yarn, and finding something that feels like you.
This upcoming market will be my very first one, and I wanted to share a little behind-the-scenes look at how I choose what to make and why intention matters so much to me as a maker.
Creating With a Real Person in Mind
When I design crochet pieces, I don’t think about “selling to everyone.”
I think about one person.
She’s probably local. She loves handmade things. She might wear jeans and a tee one day and a flowy dress the next. She enjoys being outdoors: festivals, fairs, bonfires, maybe a lake day or two. Comfort matters to her, but so does style. She wants pieces that feel relaxed, expressive, and a little bit boho.
Designing with a real person in mind helps me create items that feel intentional instead of random...and that’s something I care deeply about.
Why Cohesion Matters
When you see the Hippie Stitches booth, I want it to feel calm, creative, and inviting - not overwhelming.
That means I focus on:
-
Pieces that work well together
-
Complementary colors and textures
-
Items that feel like part of the same story
Everything doesn’t have to match perfectly, but it should feel like it belongs. Handmade should feel curated, not cluttered.
Choosing Materials for Comfort and Season
This particular market is happening in late April, heading into warmer weather, so most of the pieces I’m creating are made with cotton or breathable fibers that feel good in spring and summer.
You’ll see:
-
Lightweight accessories
-
Soft, easy-to-wear garments
-
Pieces designed for layering, movement, and everyday comfort
A few items use acrylic yarn when it makes sense for the design, but every choice is made thoughtfully.
Accessories That Let You Express Yourself
I love accessories because they let you show your personality without overthinking it.
For this market, I’ve been creating:
-
Lightweight bandana-style cowls
-
Crocheted earrings
-
Small statement pieces that are easy to wear and easy to love
These are the kinds of things you can throw on with something you already own and instantly feel a little more you.
A Little “Semi-Handmade” Magic
Some of my favorite pieces combine crochet with ready-made items, like hats or small canvas bags, so I can focus on what I love most: the yarn, the texture, the design.
This approach lets me:
-
Keep pieces durable and practical
-
Offer items at more accessible price points
-
Create designs that are perfect for festivals, fairs, and everyday adventures
It’s all about balance: handmade where it matters most, without sacrificing function.
Letting Creativity Be a Process
Not every idea makes it to the final table...and that’s okay.
Some things get frogged (ripped out). Some get cut apart. Some turn into something completely different than I originally imagined. Creativity isn’t about perfection; it’s about experimenting, learning, and letting the work evolve.
That process is part of the heart of Hippie Stitches.
What You Can Expect
This first market isn’t about being perfect, it’s about connection.
It’s about sharing handmade pieces with people who appreciate the time, care, and creativity that goes into them. It’s about building something local, slow, and meaningful.
If you stop by the booth, I hope you feel welcome. I hope you find something that speaks to you. And I hope you can feel the intention stitched into every piece.
Thank you for supporting handmade and being part of this journey.
