One of my favorite things about attending local markets is how inspiring they can be creatively. Every event has its own personality, and after spending Saturday at Cedardale Farm Dahlia Mother's Day Market, I came home completely inspired to make something floral, summery, and just a little bit different.
So naturally… I grabbed yarn.
This latest experiment turned into a crochet floral trucker hat featuring a handmade rosette flower in soft red, white, and blue tones. It has a slightly vintage, cottagecore feel while still giving a subtle patriotic summer vibe... perfect for the Wright County Fair, Festival, The Farmers Market, and all the small-town summer events coming up soon.
Inspired by Local Summer Markets
This recent market was much smaller and more relaxed than some of the larger event I’d participated in recently, but honestly, that made it really special. I loved meeting other vendors, chatting with shoppers, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of the flower farm. The best part: a golden lab named Sandy who wanted petted!
Since the setting was full of blooming dahlias and summer colors, I wanted my booth to reflect that same feeling. I brought along some floral-inspired crochet pieces and realized quickly how much people were drawn to handmade flowers and soft vintage-inspired accessories.
That inspired me to come home and start experimenting with new wearable crochet pieces for summer.
The Crochet Rosette Experiment
For this hat, I used:
- A plain trucker hat from the craft store
- Cotton yarn from my stash
- A simple crochet rosette pattern inspired by Melanie Ham
The flower itself is beginner-friendly and surprisingly relaxing to make. Once completed, the rosette gets rolled into shape and stitched together to create a dimensional flower that can be attached to hats, bags, headbands, and more.
I decided to use softer Americana colors instead of bright traditional patriotic shades. The muted burgundy red and dusty blue felt a little more “me” and fit the relaxed boho aesthetic I tend to gravitate toward.
I’m still deciding if I want to make future versions with:
- Smaller flowers
- Multiple mini blooms
- Brighter red, white, and blue combinations
- Vintage-inspired distressed hats
- More layered floral arrangements
And honestly… I may end up trying all of the above.
Summer Crochet is So Much Fun
As the weather warms up, I naturally find myself reaching for smaller, lighter crochet projects instead of giant blankets and heavy winter makes.
Summer is such a fun season for:
- Crochet accessories
- Market bags
- Jewelry
- Hair scarves and bandanas
- Lightweight wearables
- Floral embellishments
These smaller projects are portable, creative, and perfect for crafting while preparing for local markets and festivals.
More Red, White & Blue Crochet Coming Soon
This floral trucker hat may have started as a fun experiment, but it definitely sparked some new ideas for upcoming handmade items.
I’ll be working on more red, white, and blue inspired crochet pieces, including accessories, floral items, and one-of-a-kind market creations.
So if you enjoy handmade crochet with a relaxed boho vibe, or are looking for the perfect patriotic piece to wear, be sure to keep checking back with Hippie Stitches for new arrivals, upcoming market dates, and fresh summer crochet designs.
And if you see something you love at a market, don’t wait too long… many of my handmade items are one-of-a-kind and may not be recreated exactly the same way twice!
