The Inspirational Studio Space That Feeds My Creativity

One of the questions I get asked the most is where I create. Not just physically, but emotionally. What kind of space helps ideas flow? What makes creativity feel safe, welcoming, and inspiring?

Today, I wanted to share a little glimpse into my studio space and how it came to be. Because it reflects the same philosophy behind Hippie Stitches: intention, creativity, reuse, and making room for what truly matters.

From Guest Room to Creative Sanctuary

This space used to be a guest room...one that only saw visitors a couple of times a year. Meanwhile, I was creating constantly. Filming, designing, dreaming, organizing yarn, and working on projects that bring joy to myself and others.

So we made a decision: instead of letting the room sit mostly unused, we transformed it into a dedicated creative studio. A place where ideas could live full-time.

And while I say “we,” I should be honest, my husband did all of the heavy lifting while I offered very helpful design commentary like, “That feels right there.” 😉

Starting Fresh (Without Starting From Scratch)

One of the things I love most about this space is that it wasn’t built from brand-new everything. Most of the furniture and décor was thrifted, repurposed, or “shopped from home.” That felt important. Creativity doesn’t require perfection or expensive upgrades. It just needs intention.

A thick wool rug (passed down from my daughter) anchors the room, adding warmth, texture, and even helping soften sound. Small, whimsical details, like a thrifted light switch cover, make the space feel personal instead of staged.

To reduce visual clutter, we added a simple curtain to hide the closet. Inside are storage bins filled with yarn, dyeing supplies, and spinning tools - organized, accessible, and out of sight when I want the room to feel calm.

Thrifted Treasures With Stories

Over the years, I’ve collected pieces that make me smile:
vintage crochet books tucked into a wicker basket, a 1940s waterfall-style dresser, a bamboo magazine holder filled with yarn, an old clock, and even a quirky white pheasant figurine that came from the Rowan Church sale during a Highway 3 garage sale weekend.

None of these things were expensive or trendy, but they feel meaningful. They remind me that creative spaces should feel lived in, not showroom-perfect.

A Yarn Display With Intention

One of my favorite spots in the room is a wicker stand that holds yarn I plan to use next. This actually belonged to Rod's aunt decades ago and I was THRILLED to add it in my space. These are not impulse buys, they’re projects chosen with care. Seeing them every day keeps me inspired and grounded.

Nearby, a small plant stand adds a touch of greenery (the very low-maintenance kind 😉). It’s amazing how even small visual cues can make a space feel more alive.

A Desk That Supports My Body and My Creativity

The only brand-new piece in the room is my adjustable desk, and it’s been a game changer. It allows me to sit or stand while I work, which makes long creative sessions feel more sustainable.

The desk holds my everyday essentials like paper, pencils, tools, and my sewing machine fits neatly into its own nook below. Everything has a place, which means my mind feels clearer when I sit down to create.

Shelves nearby hold sewing and crochet books, along with (because I can’t resist) a tiny wicker chair overflowing with yarn.

The Little Details That Matter

Amber glass, needlepoint art, vintage clocks, organized notions: these are the things that quietly support creativity. My yarn swift and ball winder finally have a proper home, ready to be used instead of stored away.

Almost everything in this room was thrifted, reused, or already loved and that’s intentional. My rule has always been simple: if I love it and it works, it belongs.

A Space That Feels Like Home

This studio isn’t just a place to work, it’s a reflection of how I approach creativity and business. Cozy. Intentional. A little eclectic. Deeply personal.

It reminds me every day that making things - whether yarn goods, creative projects, or even blog posts - doesn’t have to be rushed or perfect. It just has to be honest.

Until next time, you can find me here. I'll be crocheting, dreaming, and probably admiring my yarn just a little longer than necessary.
